Fix Manufacturing’s Guide to Winter Prep

By January 10, 2025Uncategorized

As the temperatures dip and the days grow shorter, it’s time to dust off your skis or snowboard and head to the mountains. Whether you’re lapping the park or earning your tracks in the backcountry, proper winter prep can make all the difference. Here’s your go-to checklist to ensure you’re set for whatever conditions come your way this winter.

Wax and Edge

When it comes to your snowboard or ski gear, there’s no such thing as being too prepared. Start by giving your board the attention it deserves with a base waxed and edges sharpen. Sharp edges are essential for those early-season icy conditions and variable snow. As the snow can be unpredictable, with some areas freezing up early, sharp edges give you the control you need to navigate early-season conditions. The snow can turn sticky when warmer early-season temperatures keep things above freezing. A proper wax ensures that your board glides smoothly and efficiently, so you don’t lose momentum on those slightly slower runs.

Ensure your wax is appropriate for the temperatures you’ll be riding in. A colder, drier snow requires a harder wax, while warmer, wetter snow calls for something softer. By adjusting the wax to suit the forecast, you can ensure optimal performance throughout the season.

snowboard binding

Bindings: Check the Rubber and Plastic

Your bindings are your connection to the mountain, so inspecting them thoroughly is crucial. Check all the rubber and plastic components for wear and tear. Over time, exposure to the sun and weather can cause rubber straps to crack or plastic to degrade. If you’ve stored your gear in an attic or an uninsulated garage, the heat during the summer months can make the plastic and rubber brittle. Take a few minutes to bend the binding straps and check for any cracks that could compromise their performance. If you spot any damage, now’s the time to replace them before you’re left with a malfunctioning setup halfway down the mountain.

tighten deck screws snowboard

Board Interface: Tighten Those Deck Screws

Your board interface, where the bindings meet the deck, is a crucial connection point. Before the season begins, check all the deck screws to ensure they are tight and secure. If you’ve had your board sitting around, the screws may have loosened over time. A good practice is to use teflon tape on the screws to prevent them from coming undone during your ride. This simple step can save you from a frustrating fix on the slopes.

While you’re at it, double-check for any missing or damaged screws. If any are missing, replace them immediately. A small screw might seem insignificant, but it’s crucial to your overall setup. If your screws are showing signs of rust or wear, replace them before you hit the snow.

seam tape failure waterproof jacket

Apparel: Ensure Comfort and Function

When you’re out in the elements, your apparel is just as important as your board. Start by checking the taped seams on your Gore-Tex jackets. Over time, these seams can start to separate, especially if you’ve had the jacket for a few seasons. A small tear or separation in the seam could lead to water leakage. Next, check the foam on your goggles for rot. Moisture, sweat, and humidity can degrade the foam over time, reducing the comfort and performance of your goggles. Make sure the foam still feels intact and doesn’t smell musty. If it’s starting to fall apart, it might be time to invest in a new set of goggles. Lastly, inspect any rubberized zipper pulls and snaps. These small details can be a point of failure when you’re adjusting your gear on the fly. The last thing you want is a snap breaking while you’re halfway up the lift.

chains for winter driving

Vehicle: Be Prepared for the Road

Whether you’re driving up to the resort or venturing out to the backcountry, your vehicle needs to be winter-ready. If you’re driving to snowy or icy areas, make sure you’re carrying chains with you. If your vehicle is AWD or 4WD, ensure that your tires are rated M+S (Mud and Snow) for the conditions. Regular tires can quickly lose traction on icy roads, so make sure your setup is ready for winter roads. Don’t forget to check your windshield wiper fluid. It’s easy to overlook, but cold temperatures can freeze unprepared wiper fluid, leaving you stranded with a dirty windshield. Make sure your fluid is freeze-rated and topped up before you head out. Another quick tip is to thoroughly clean the inside of your windshield to help prevent fogging during your drive.

Finally, make sure your side mirrors are clear. Snow and ice can quickly build up on the mirrors, obstructing your view. Before you leave, a quick scrape will ensure maximum visibility on the road.
