or simply following the recent weather headlines, you’ve probably heard talk of a
possible Super El Niño. But what exactly is a Super El Niño, and what could it mean for
your next adventure? Large climate patterns like El Niño influence everything from
seasonal swell and snowfall to wildfire risk and trail conditions. While they can’t predict
exactly what any given day will look like, understanding how they work can help you
plan for the seasons ahead—whether that means dusting off your powder board,
ordering a new step-up, or booking trips to take advantage of the conditions that are
most likely to develop.

What is El Niño?
El Niño is a climate pattern that develops when sea surface temperatures in the
equatorial Pacific become warmer than average. That warming changes atmospheric
circulation, shifting the jet stream and altering the paths that storms typically follow. The result is a ripple effect that influences weather patterns around the world, affecting everything from snowfall in the Rockies to swell along the California coast.
So, what can you expect during an El Niño year? Typically, an El Niño means a wet,
active winter in California, which can mean more swell and increased snowfall. El Niño
winters can also be abnormally dry and warm in the Pacific Northwest, a region typically characterized by heavy rain and snowfall. NOAA emphasizes that El Niño changes the probability of certain weather patterns—it doesn’t guarantee them.

Is “Super El Niño” Actually a Scientific Term?
No. “Super El Niño” is not an official scientific classification. Neither the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) nor the broader meteorological
community formally defines an event as a “Super El Niño.” Instead, the term is
commonly used by the media and forecasters to describe exceptionally strong El Niño
events, typically those with sea surface temperature anomalies of around 2°C or greater in the equatorial Pacific.
The El Niño events of 1982–83, 1997–98, and 2015–16 are widely regarded as the
strongest on record and are often referred to as “Super El Niños.” Each produced
significant but different weather impacts worldwide, highlighting that even the strongest El Niño events don’t produce identical outcomes. NOAA does classify El Niño strength (weak, moderate, strong), but “Super El Niño” is not one of its official categories.
What Could Change This Winter for Skiers, Snowboarders, and surfers?
For skiers and snowboarders, El Niño can be a mixed bag depending on where you
ride. In the Pacific Northwest, lower elevations often experience warmer temperatures and more rain, while higher elevations can still receive significant snowfall. California, on the other hand, has historically benefited from some of its biggest Sierra snow years during strong El Niño events. The Rockies are far less predictable. Some regions experience below-average snowfall during El Niño winters, while others see little noticeable change. If you’re planning a destination trip, it’s worth following seasonal forecasts rather than assuming every mountain will benefit equally.
For surfers, large El Niño events often produce more consistent long-period swell
events throughout the Pacific. This also comes with increased coastal erosion and
storm events. In general, an El Niño year means a more active Pacific Ocean.

What El Niño Means for Spring and Summer
An elevated snowpack means more water in our rivers, reservoirs, and ecosystems as it melts through the spring and early summer. With most of the contiguous United States currently experiencing drought, that additional water will be a welcome sight. For hikers, mountain bikers, and climbers, a healthy snowpack often translates to robust wildflower blooms and lush alpine landscapes, though it can also delay the opening of mountain roads and high-elevation trails well into the summer.
While a Super El Niño doesn’t guarantee endless powder days or perfect surf, it does
provide valuable insight into the types of conditions that are more likely to develop over the coming seasons.
